There are different repair options for damaged teeth that your dentist may consider. These options depend on a few different factors, with one of the main factors being the amount of damage to the tooth. If there are minimal amounts of damage, your dentist may recommend dental bonding. For more severe damage, a dental crown may be the best option. If the damage is somewhere in-between, your dentist may recommend dental veneers.

If you have a cracked, chipped, discolored, or otherwise damaged tooth, contact Forest Hills Dental. Dr. Mark will take a look and see what the best replacement option is to restore your smile.

Are Dental Veneers Right for Me?

If a patient has healthy gums and the majority of the specific tooth that is damaged is healthy, veneers may be the right repair choice. While dental veneers are more of a cosmetic repair, they do provide additional support to a tooth that has been damaged.

Some of the reasons for dental veneers include:

  • Repairing cracks and chips
  • Adjusting uneven and misaligned teeth
  • Additional tooth support
  • Improving tooth coloration

Dental veneers are also very helpful when it comes to the mood and self-esteem of the patient. Having nice-looking teeth can give a patient a boost in confidence and encourages them to smile with pride.

In order to determine if dental veneers are right for you, your dentist will check how and why the tooth was damaged. They may need to repair the tooth before the placement of a veneer. Once the tooth is healthy, your dentist will be able to place your veneer.

One of the biggest factors for which repair option your dentist will choose is how damaged the tooth is that needs to be repaired. If a large portion of the crown is damaged, they may opt to place a dental crown to not only improve the appearance of the tooth but also provide additional stability. With that being said, dentists generally want to keep as much of a natural tooth as they can. If the tooth only has minor cracks, chips, or discoloration, a veneer is a more likely option.

Dental Veneers and Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are often used when a tooth has become decayed to the point where the crown of the tooth can’t be saved, or when there is other damage (like a crack) that is severe enough that a dental veneer isn’t enough to repair the tooth.

If you have a damaged or decayed tooth, schedule an appointment with Dr. Mark. He will take a look and see what repair option is best for your specific needs.

Porcelain Veneers

There are different materials that dental veneers can be made from. One common material used is porcelain.

Porcelain veneers are a durable option that also look great. They can mimic the look of a natural tooth and are able to blend in with the surrounding teeth with ease. This provides a beautiful, seamless smile. Most people can’t even tell when a porcelain veneer is there.

The placement process for porcelain veneers begins with an appointment with Dr. Mark at Forest Hills Dental. Dr. Mark will examine your damaged tooth to determine what the best repair option is. If he decides the damage is minimal enough that a crown doesn’t need to be placed, he may opt for the placement of a veneer.

During your initial appointment, Dr. Mark will prep your tooth and shape it, so it is better able to hold the veneer in place. In order to ensure there is no pain during this process he will use a local anesthetic. He will then make an impression that will be sent to a lab to custom-make your dental veneer. Dr. Mark matches the color of the veneer with your surrounding teeth, so it looks natural. A temporary veneer will be placed to provide support while the final veneer is created.

Once the veneer is ready, Dr. Mark will place it. He will check to make sure the color and fit match, then he will use a bonding agent to adhere the veneer to the tooth that is being repaired. Before you know it, you’ll have your dental veneer placed!

Composite (“Same-Day”) Veneers

Same-day (composite) veneers are able to be placed during the initial visit instead of needing to be created in a lab, as they are created in our office. Many patients like composite veneers because they are easy to place, affordable, and effective. It’s important to keep in mind, though, that they aren’t as durable or translucent as porcelain. Dr. Mark will provide you with more details about the different materials so you can make the decision that is best to meet your needs.
