What is Invisalign?

If you’re looking for an alternative to braces, Invisalign is the trusted leader in clear orthodontic treatment. Unlike metal wires and brackets attached to your teeth, Invisalign straightens your smile with removable, translucent aligners.

Every two weeks, you’ll change your orthodontic alignment trays out with the next in the series. Your smile straightens in front of your very eyes, gradually becoming better aligned with each pair of appliances.

About every other month, you’ll want to stop by Forest Hills Dental for Dr. Mark to evaluate your progress. As long as everything is moving along as it should, we’ll send you home with the next sets of trays to continue your treatment. Occasionally we’ll need to adjust a few things or add “buttons” to specific teeth, which are small tooth-colored extensions that provide a surface for your trays to grab onto.

Invisalign vs. Metal Braces

Our Forest Hills Invisalign patients get to enjoy more flexibility and comfort with their removable clear braces. Some of the biggest advantages of choosing Invisalign over conventional orthodontics include:

  • No referrals to an orthodontic specialist
  •  Freedom to enjoy all your favorite foods
  •  No irritating metal appliances in your mouth
  •  Fewer and shorter appointments
  •  Proven treatment backed by over two decades of technology
  •  An “invisible” system that other people won’t notice
  •  Easier to clean and maintain

When you see an experienced Invisalign dentist like Dr. Mark, you can rest assured knowing your smile is in great hands. Dr. Mark is a mentor for some of the country’s most prestigious dental organizations, including the Kois Center and Blue Sky Academy.

A Digitally Mapped Orthodontic System

Invisalign labs uses 3D scans of your teeth and jaws to create a virtual replica of your oral anatomy. From there, we can digitally map out the movement of each individual tooth, showing your smile’s alignment progress at different stages of treatment. In fact, you can even get a virtual preview of what your smile is expected to look like after Invisalign.

Our practice has innovative digital imaging equipment that allows us to take a virtual “impression” of your teeth, electronically transferring it to the lab. There aren’t any gooey trays to tickle your throat.

Forest Hill Adult Orthodontics: Why Now?

Having a straighter smile can significantly improve your oral health. Crooked and misaligned teeth are statistically at a higher risk of developing problems like gum disease, tooth decay, and even contributing to TMJ disorder.

By aligning your smile, your teeth can function at an optimized level. They’re also easier to clean and less likely to succumb to oral infections or premature wear.

It’s never too late to finally invest in the straighter smile you’ve always wanted. And with Invisalign, adult orthodontics in Forest Hills are easier to fit into your lifestyle and schedule.

If you’re wondering whether you’re too old to get invisible braces, the answer is no. Adults make excellent Invisalign candidates, because they’re committed to following their care recommendations and instructions. It’s not uncommon for our Forest Hills dentist to see retirees or busy grandparents who are finally getting to invest in their smile for the first time. Invisalign works well into your 60s, 70s, and beyond!

What About Teen Invisalign?

Are teens candidates for Invisalign? Yes! Invisalign is a great option for teenagers who don’t want to wear metal braces but need a solution for straightening their bite.

Of course, Invisalign does require a bit of responsibility. If your teen has trouble keeping up with things or doesn’t follow instructions very well, wearing a removable braces system could be a challenge. But for focused, responsible teens, Invisalign is a wonderful option!

Adult and Teen Invisalign even comes with built-in wear indicators, triggering the wearer when it’s time to change the trays out with the next set.

Keeping Your Invisalign Trays Clean

Invisalign is meant to remove every time you eat (or drink anything other than water.) Before you put your trays back in, be sure to brush or rinse well.

Twice a day, remove your aligners to thoroughly brush and floss your teeth. The inside of your trays should be cleaned with a toothbrush and lukewarm tap water. Never use hot water, since it can change the shape of the plastic.

For best results, you’ll need to wear your Invisalign braces at least 22 hours a day. This window gives you enough time to take them out for meals and home care.

Candidates for Invisalign

Before wearing any type of braces, you’ll need to have your teeth examined to make sure there’s no active tooth decay (cavities) or gum disease. Dr. Mark will also check to see how your jaws close together, including how your teeth bite against one another.

Depending on the severity of your tooth misalignment, Invisalign may or may not be the best choice. We’ll discuss our findings with you at the time of your consultation, so that you can make an educated decision about which steps to take next.

Invisalign is great for minor crowding or crooked teeth, small gaps between teeth, and even some overbites. As time goes on, the innovative technology behind Invisalign makes correcting more moderate to severe cases easier than ever.
